Giveaway Winner & New Purchases

Congratulations, Manda! I hope you enjoy The Blank Wall as much as I did. Please contact me at gudrunstights(at)gmail.com with your shipping address.

I recently got a raise at work after not having had one for a few years. I’m not sure why, but this propelled me to go on a little book buying binge, like I needed to use up all my extra funds to buy, buy, buy more gorgeous books! I spent the most money on a small collection of the hardback Penguin Classics designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. I’ve coveted these forever. I plan to buy a few more over the next couple of months to grow my collection because they are just so pretty.

The other books I bought are all paperbacks:

The Priory by Dorothy Whipple – a must read after I so enjoyed Greenbanks last month.

Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon – my first novel from the Penguin English Library series.

The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton – a new-to-me Wharton to celebrate the 150th anniversary of her birth.

Manhattan, When I Was Young by Mary Cantwell – a book recommended on this Mad Men reading list.

Peyton Place by Grace Metalious – an impulse purchase I hope was worth it.

I am so in love with all of these beauties. Have you fallen in love with any books lately?

The Blank Wall Giveaway (Closed) + Raspberry Oat Muffins

What better way to share your favorite books then by giving them away to others? I want to spread the word about my top books of the year so far so I am giving away 1 copy of The Blank Wall by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding. This suspense novel set during World War II is a brilliant thriller, but it is also a riveting social study that examines the life of one family on the American homefront and how they cope while their husband and father is away at war.

To enter the giveaway, please fill out the form here. Entries are due by midnight, US Pacific Standard Time, on August 15. The giveaway is open internationally. The winner will be randomly chosen.

This is a really great book and I can’t wait to force it on share it with one of you!

On Sunday evening, while watching the women’s beach volleyball, I tried out a recipe I saw recently on the Bake or Break blog. Raspberry Oat Muffins in theory just sounded so scrumptious – and in reality they turned out to be pretty superbly wonderful. These muffins are easy to assemble and only take the length of two sets of beach volleyball and 1 heat of the men’s 100 meter race to make.

I’ve been eating them for breakfast every day this week and I like them because they are not too sweet like the muffins you buy at the grocery store or the coffee shop. The raspberries are subtle yet tart and the oats in the batter give them a nice density that is often missing in store bought muffins. I didn’t use sanding sugar, which is recommended in the recipe, but they still developed a nice, crunchy top. Give them a try!

Have you made anything delicious lately?

Gudrun’s Tights 1st Birthday Giveaway! (closed)

Hip, hip, hooray! Gudrun’s Tights is 1 today!

I have so enjoyed writing this blog for the past year and getting to meet so many of you wonderful readers. Blogging is one of the greatest joys of my life and it is all because of you! I do enjoy writing about books and my literary obsessions and might do it regardless of a response, but knowing that I am writing for people who actually read what I write and support my efforts is such a pleasure.

So thank you, thank you, thank you for making this year at my little blog a very happy and fulfilling one.

Birthdays usually involve presents, don’t they? Of course, they do! So I’d like to offer a present to one of my fabulous readers in celebration of my blog birthday. I have a couple of items to choose from:

The postcard set includes 100 postcards of authors published by Penguin Modern Classics. Some of the authors included are D.H. Lawrence (very handsome), Virginia Woolf, Jean Rhys, and Truman Capote. They are simple, chic, black-and-white photos and would look wonderful displayed in a work area or even framed.

The second choice is a brand-new copy of Some Tame Gazelle by Barbara Pym. Pym has become one of my favorite authors (my review of Excellent Women is forthcoming) and if you like funny, quaint, charming domestic fiction she is the author to read.

The giveaway is open internationally – just leave a comment below to enter and tell me which of the two presents you’d like if you win!

Entries will be accepted from now until Tuesday, May 1, 11:59 pm, PST and the winner will be randomly chosen and announced on Wednesday, May 2. One entry per person, please.

Thank you very much for reading, friends! Here’s to another year of blogging and friendship!
