Weekly Post September 8

004

This wasn’t a very good reading week for me. I had monstrous allergies Monday – Thursday that made me hate the world. I suffered through the work day then parked myself on the couch to watch TV as soon as I got home. Reading was too much for my brain. Thankfully, by Thursday evening I started to feel better and Friday I was feeling my usual self – just in time for me to start reading Mrs. Dalloway for the Classics Club Spin.

kalingAt work I ‘curated’ a Funny Ladies book display. I don’t get to do displays very often because they aren’t really in my job description as the youth services librarian. The librarian who normally does them, however, was on vacation so I grabbed the opportunity to fill an empty display and decided to highlight books by female comedians such as Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman. It’s been pretty popular and I even decided to read a couple of books from it myself – Bossypants by Tina Fey and Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling. I haven’t finished either of them yet, but so far they are both very funny. I think I prefer Mindy Kaling’s brand of humor, though, and get more of her cultural references. They are good, light reads for when your soul needs silliness, which I think mine definitely does lately.

One week from today is the beginning of Mary Stewart Reading Week! As the time draws near I am getting very excited to see what everyone chooses to post about. I still haven’t quite decided what I’ll be reading. I’m wavering between Wildfire at Midnight, Nine Coaches Waiting and This Rough Magic – they’re all tempting me. I might just end up reading more than one book next week.

And this reminds me – I haven’t thanked my friend Charles yet for designing the MSRW badge/logo – thanks Charles!

I’ll be back sometime this week to post some mini reviews – see you soon and happy reading.

  1. I’m glad you’re feeling better! It’s awful to have to be at work when you’re not.

I am still waffling on MWRW myself. I just got a copy of the 3rd Merlin book (The Last Enchantment), which I’ve never read, but I’m feeling like I want to read the first two again first, since it’s been so long. I don’t think I can manage all three in a week 🙂 So it will probably be The Ivy Tree or Touch Not the Cat.

    1. I truly did the bare minimum at work last week. Too hard to concentrate with a sinus headache.
I really liked Touch Not the Cat – it has a touch of the supernatural in it that I enjoy. I haven’t read The Ivy Tree yet so am glad that several people have mentioned they’ll be reading it.

  2. I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better now. I have also been suffering with my sinuses. I know how it feels to just slump in front of the television because reading takes too much brain power!

  3. Glad you’re feeling better, I know from experience that allergies can make you pretty miserable!
I think I’m going to take part in the Mary Stewart reading week, I’ve never read her before but have the first book about Merlin on my kindle, perfect opportunity to try it 🙂

  4. The MSRW badge is lovely! I think it’s one of my favorite reading week badges that I’ve seen. I’m going to move The Moonspinners up to the top of my To Read pile to have it ready for next week.

  5. I can’t wait to hear how you like Mrs. Dalloway. It is one of my favorite books. I need to explore Mary Stewart and find out about her, since you are devoting a reading week to her work. Looking forward to finding out more and also hearing about what everyone will be reading.
