Best wishes for the new year!
I was going to write a post yesterday on my best books of 2013, but the company who hosts my blog had a server outage and I couldn’t access my blog for the majority of the day and then…I became obsessed with a knitting project. So, in lieu of doing a best books list this year I’ll share six books, three classics and three contemporary titles, that provided me with a superior reading experience in 2013 and that I highly recommend to you.
The classics: Angel by Elizabeth Taylor, The Mountain Lion by Jean Stafford and Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates.
The contemporaries: Fin & Lady by Cathleen Schine, Life After Life by Kate Atkinson and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.
Here’s to lots of fabulous books and wonderful conversations in 2014!
A very happy New Year to you! That is a gorgeous card you’ve posted.
I also have Life After Life on my list – it is such an amazing book. I’m still recommending it to people.
How did the purling turn out? I do crochet, but I haven’t knitted in years.

Isn’t the card lovely? I did pick up how to purl, but I am having a hard time actually making something. I started a scarf yesterday and it all went wrong somewhere. But I’m not giving up!

Did you say knitting!?? 🙂 What are you knitting? Knitting is almost as fun as reading!

Judy, I just taught myself and I have no idea what I’m doing! I can cast on and do the knit stitch and purl, but putting them all together is a challenge. I am *trying* to make a scarf.

Everyone and their dogs seems to have Me Before You in the best-of list. *adding it to the wish-list*

Haha! It is a great, emotionally involved story. It steals your heart and I am not surprised that so many people added it to their favorites lists.

I hope 2014 will be a great year for you. I didn’t realise you had taken up knitting. When you get into it you’ll find it very relaxing, I think I could knit before I started school, I’m sure it’s easier to pick up when you’re really wee!

I just taught myself to knit over last weekend and I am working on my first scarf. After many failed attempts, it is finally coming together for me and I love it! I tried crochet last year and it didn’t take so I am happy that knitting is more my speed. I wish I would have learned knitting, sewing, etc. when I was young, but better late than never!

Love Angel and Revolutionary Road, so I must check out the others!

The Mountain Lion is also quite good and would fit in with A Century of Books (it was published in 1947) 🙂

Happy New Year! I’ve only read Revolutionary Road from your ‘superiors’ – and I was so impressed by it. I haven’t read any more books by Yates, so I don’t know if he ever managed anything quite to powerful elsewhere.

I thought Revolutionary Road was devastating. I regret not ever posting my thoughts about it. I own a copy of Easter Parade and I hope to read it this year – I hope it will be as brilliant.
