Reading Interrupted by Cuteness

Do you ever have those weeks when life gets in the way of reading? This past week was one of those for me. After finishing Howards End on Tuesday night I didn’t read another page until Friday evening. And it was all because of this little guy:

My niece, Bella, found this sweet little kitten in my parents’ neighborhood on Wednesday and fell in love with him. When she took him home, however, her hopes were dashed when my sister promptly informed her that they couldn’t keep him. So, me being the recent cat lover that I am, I was called upon to rescue him. I took him home and cleaned him up and resolved to find him a loving home. With two cats of my own I just couldn’t keep him either and my feelings were confirmed when I observed that my cats, Flora and Mabel, were upset and unhappy that this kitten had invaded their home. Thankfully, one of my cousins decided to adopt him and he is now in a home with children who are smothering him with affection.

Though I haven’t been reading, I have been accumulating! I went on a library book binge this week and checked out every book that looked even remotely interesting to me. I do this sometimes. It’s a bad habit, but at least I’m not spending money on them, right? I know that I will not read all of these books, but they are so shiny and pretty and enticing that I like to have them around me for a while. This is what I checked out:

  1. Oooh. A lovely kitten and some wonderful books. I can never have such a binge because I can never make enough space on my ticket. I loved Dead Scared and Girl Reading and. I can understand Flora and mabel being upset – Briar butts in every time I move to say hello to another dod when we’re out and about.

    1. Animals can be pretty possessive, can’t they? But I am possessive of them too!
      Girl Reading was recommended in an article about Hilary Mantel as one of her favorite historical novels. That alone makes me want to read it.

  2. Book borrowing is a good habit to have, I think I get as good a rush from it as some people get from maxing out credit cards. I have a writer friend who borrows more books than he can possibly read so that the authors will get some money from the public lending right.
    I fancy the Robert K Massie book and I read the Margaret Powell one years ago.
    Cats – they keep trying to adopt me as a mummy – I keep fending them off. A cat once jumped on my head and then licked me, very rough tongue. I don’t speak ‘cat’ so I don’t know what that was all about but – quite scary!

    1. Haha! I think that cat liked you, Katrina. They usually don’t jump on you if they don’t.
      I agree that book borrowing can give you a rush. It certainly helps to cheer me up when I’m having a rough day.

  3. I did that the other day, nothing I had at home sounded appealing, so I just wandered around the stacks and found several things to bring home. I hadn’t done that in a while, usually I just pick up the books I have on reserve and take a quick look in the new book bins.

    I took most of them back today unread, but I don’t mind that.

    So which one are you going to start with? I keep Susanna Kearsley’s name, but I’ve never seen one of her books.

    The kitten is too adorable. Someone in my office found a beautiful little girl kitten, but I also have two set-in-their-ways older cats and I just couldn’t. Not to mention my lease limits me to two.

    1. I think I am going to return almost all of the books. I started a few of them and they weren’t what I was expecting, so back to the library they go. I think I am reading too many contemporary novels lately and would like to get back to the classics.
      I really wish I could have another cat. My lease permits it, but my sanity does not!

  4. OH!! He is absolutely precious! I’m happy he found a loving home. As for the book collecting at the library, yes, I do that too. They are all so tempting!
